COMPLETED Jan 31, 2025

Warm tears flow down your face, each drop leaving a trail of liquid in its wake. You wipe them away with the back of your sleeve, but more appear quickly to your dismay. There are traces of fine salt all over your cheeks and hands.

You let out a quiet noise of frustration and grip the blanket beneath you, but the sound turns quickly into a sob.

A voice filters in from outside your bedroom door—so quiet you could almost have missed it.

"hey….. are you okay in there………"

Napstablook's voice. You turn your head towards the door and slow your breathing, trying to quiet down.

"i hope you're alright…….. i don't want to bother you…. i can leave if you want me to"

You shift in your seat, debating what to say before taking a shuddery breath. "No, no, no, please… don't go. You can… you can come in."

The ghost in question phases through your door silently, and upon seeing your sorry state, floats over to join you on your bed.

"oh……."

Shyly, they rest a ghostly hand onto yours. It's cold to the touch, bringing your thoughts away from your misery momentarily.

"is there anything you want to talk about…….."

You gain the resolve to look up at them, and there are glimpses of sympathy and worry in their tired eyes.

You don't want to make them worry.

"I… I don't know. I just…" You sigh. "Nothing seems to be going right for me lately. I'm trying really hard"—your voice cracks—"to keep it together, but there's only so much I can take—"

You let out another shaky sigh. Tears flow out at the same time, as if on cue. A sob escapes your throat and you bring your knees up to your chest, burying your face there.

Neither of you speak for about a minute.

"hey….. i……."

Tentatively, you turn your head to look at them—just enough to see their face clearly. Or, you'd be able to see them clearly if your tears weren't blurring your vision so much.

"i understand how you feel…. i've felt this way before…. a lot….."

They pat your hand gently.

"and…. i want you to feel alright….. so… if there's anything i can do"

They avert their gaze for a moment, as if unable to bear looking at you.

"please tell me….. because…."

They trail off, but you understand what they mean.

You nod. "I'm sorry for… making you worry. I… I don't want you to worry about me."

Napstablook tilts their head slightly. "don't say that….. you're important to me……. i…"

They move slightly closer to you, and the cold air around them sends a chill down your back.

"i love you, and…. people care about the people they love…… or…. what am i saying….."

They've always been shy about their feelings. You're used to it. You appreciate the sentiment, and you let them know that as much as you can.

You've stopped crying, at least, and your breathing has calmed down. That's a start.

Napstablook smiles at you, empathetic. You try to smile back.

Pulling your blanket closer to you, you cuddle up next to them—as much as you can with an incorporeal being, anyway. The blanket is warm and comforting. You'd pull it over their lower half, but you know it'd just phase through them.

"If you're not too busy… could you stay with me? I'm worried I'll get worse again if I'm alone."

"of course……"
